Natural Joint Supplements Information

What are Natural Joint Supplements?

Natural joint supplements are supplements that are taken to (i) support healthy joints and prevent joint degeneration, (ii) provide symptomatic relief from joint pain, (iii) aid the healing process of joint damage and prevent further degeneration of joints. The most effective natural joint supplements are glucosamine, chondroitin, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), omega 3 and hyaluronic acid. For more information on these, check out the pages from the navigation bar at the top.

Do I Need Joint Supplements?

Many people opt to take natural joint supplements as an ‘insurance’ against joint problems, in the same way that many take a multivitamin to ensure they are getting enough of the required vitamins and minerals. If you fit in any of the categories below, it is strongly recommended that you consider taking joint supplements:

  • if you are an athlete following an intensive training regimen, especially if you practice a high impact sport such as running, soccer, football, martial arts etc…
  • if you are recovering from a joint injury
  • if you suffer from osteoarthritis, a very common condition in the US
  • if you suffer from joint pain and aches
  • if you have stiff joints

In the above conditions, natural joint supplements can provide joint pain relief, speed up the healing process and prevent further degeneration of the joints.

Which are the Best Natural Joint Supplements?

There are literally thousands of supplements marketed as joint supplements. However, the best natural joint supplements which have been proven effective by rigorous studies are glucosamine, chondroitin, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), omega 3, and hyaluronic acid.  All are important for joint health and joint pain relief, but they all have specialised functions:

  • Glucosamine – this substance is used by the body to produce molecules which make up the joint cartilage. Glucosamine & Chondroitin are often taken together.
  • Chondroitin – one of the main structural components of cartilage; provides resistance to compression
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) – important for ligament health; is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent
  • Omega 3 – omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory; they are also associated with a number of other health benefits
  • Hyaluronic acid – a component of the synovial (joint) fluid and cartilage
  • Thunder god vine - an asian herb used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

Among these, omega 3, glucosamine and chondroitin have the most scientific backing. Omega 3 are also prescribed for a variety of other conditions including protection from heart disease and other degenerative conditions. Fortunately a number of all-in-one supplements are available- these often contain glucosamine, chondroitin and Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). You should stack this with an omega 3 supplement  (or fish oil) for best results. You might also want to experiment with hyaluronic acid to see if it works for you.

Other Tips for Healthy Joints

Apart from taking joint supplements, there are other things you can do to ensure healthy and strong joints:

NUTRITION – make sure you are eating a healthy diet with sufficient protein (from lean meats), essential fatty acids (from oily fish, vegetable oils, nuts and grains), vitamins and minerals (from fruit, vegetables, whole grains and nuts). It is also very important to keep well hydrated. Drink water before feeling thirsty. You should drink at least 2 liters of fluids daily. Check out the Nutrition page for more information on a healthy diet for joint health.

EXERCISE – getting regular exercise can help maintain healthy and strong joints. It will also make you feel better and protect you from chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Pilates and yoga can be very beneficial for persons with arthritis and other joint conditions. If you cannot attend a class, you can practice them in the comfort of your own home. Ebooks can be a great way to teach yourself PILATES (click for ebook) and YOGA (click for ebook).

A Crash Course in Joint Anatomy

natural joint supplements for joint healthWant to know more about joints? Joints are the place where to bones meet, eg the elbow and knee. Joints allow movement of the body. These joints are called synovial joints and are made up of bones, ligaments and tendons, cartilage and synovial fluid. Ligaments attach bones to bones; on the other hand tendons attach muscle to bones. Ligaments and tendons are made up of fibrous, connective tissue.
Cartilage is flexible tissue made up of collagen, and its function is to prevent the bones from rubbing against each other – it cushions the joint. As the cartilage does not contain blood vessels, it heals very slowly, and therefore it is imperative to try to avoid cartilage damage in the first place. In this case, prevention is much much better then cure! The synovial fluid is a viscous fluid found in the joints; the function of which is to lubricate the joints and to deliver nutrients to the joint components. Synovial fluid is rich in hyaluronic acid.

Osteoarthritis: a Common Cause of Joint Pain and Aches

Osteoarthritis is perhaps the most common cause of joint pain and aches in the United States. It results when the cartilage is worn out, and the bones end up rubbing against each other. This causes severe pain and a reduced range of motion of the joint. It is usually not caused by disease but by wear and tear. Natural joint supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin can be very helpful in osteoarthritis by providing symptomatic relief and prevent further degeneration of the cartilage. Omega 3 fatty acids, owing to their anti-inflammatory properties, can also be effective to reduce symptoms.
